Training Force USA - Investigating Using Social Media and the Internet

TOPIC: Cyber space has created a new world for criminals and a new tool for investigators. Effective law enforcement officers are learning all they can about this world and how to use it to their advantage. 21st century crime has changed from face to face interaction to cyberspace thugs, robbers, covert hacks, discreet money laundering and basic identity theft. A basic understanding of social network sites commonly used by criminals will equip law enforcement investigators with tools to investigate, gather intelligence and successfully prosecute offenders and track down wanted persons.

This course will educate participants on the trends, styles, methods and identifiers used by criminals and provide training on the use of social networking to investigate, gather intelligence, locate and prosecute wanted persons.


By use of videos, pictures, animations and accounts of events that have occurred, the instructor will show how social networking sites have affected and changed our society and forced law enforcement to use new methods and tools.

  • Psychology of social networking users
  • Criminals and social media
  • Active social media investigations techniques
  • Utilizing free web services to enhance investigations
  • Maintaining covert accounts
  • Background and Recruiting

INSTRUCTOR:  Sergeant Gerry Hyder is a 17 year veteran of the Metro Nashville Police Department in Tennessee.  In 2005 he took a position as a Detective in the Intelligence/Gang Unit and held the position of Vice President of the Middle Region for the TNGIA, (Tennessee Gang Investigators Association) for seven years. In 2014 Sergeant Hyder was assigned to supervise the Crime Suppression Unit at the new Nashville Midtown Hills Police Precinct. Sergeant Hyder lectures across the country regarding: Using Social Network Sites for Law Enforcement Investigations, Street Gangs, Hybrid Gangs, and Youth in the Street culture. Sergeant Hyder instructs recruits and sworn Officers at the Metro Nashville Police Academy and teaches classes at Vanderbilt University, the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy, and is a featured speaker for Training Force USA. Sgt. Hyder has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and is a P.O.S.T certified police instructor.
